The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82) convened in London from September 30 to October 4, 2024, with a focus on enhancing environmental standards. Key discussions included progressing mid-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures, proposing new Emission Control Areas, managing ballast water, and tackling marine litter. A significant outcome was the draft legal framework for IMO’s net-zero GHG reduction, combining technical standards and an emissions pricing mechanism, with an expected adoption in 2025. MEPC 83 will continue these advancements in April 2025.
